Make Your Collapsible Wire Containers Mobile by Installing Medium-Duty Casters

There are many ways to use medium-duty casters for industrial storage applications.  One way is to install casters on collapsible wire containers.  This allows the wire containers to be pushed by hand and move the containers when a forklift is not available.  You can still move the containers around with a forklift and stack them up to three high.  In the video below you can see we installed medium duty swivel casters with 4" x 2" phenolic wheels rated at 800 lbs. per caster.  Using all 4 swivel casters gives the operator the ability to move the container in infinite positions or tight spaces.  Sometimes we install 2 rigid casters and 2 swivel casters to help keep the containers going in a straight line when being pushed.
We can do other sizes of wire containers such as 40" x 48" are another popular size.  Many casters options are available and we can also use a floor lock mounted on the wire container to provide a positive stop.

As you can see from the video it takes about 30 seconds or so to "unfold" a collapsed wire container and about the same amount of time to "fold" it back up.

This type of container is good for many storage and picking applications.  Many times these containers are used for storing produce, large and or heavy parts.  The containers have a half drop gate on one of the 40" sides to allow easy picking into the container.  We even store our caster and wheel stock at CMH in the wire containers.  Adding medium-duty casters to these wire containers just adds another advantage to using this type of mobile storage system.

Let's talk about the most commonly used Industrial Casters: Medium-Duty Casters and Wheels

Medium
-Duty Industrial Casters and Wheels Part 2
Hi, Phil Strouth with P Strouth LLC.  I represent Carolina Material Handling in Greensboro, NC.  I have over 17 years of experience dealing with caster and wheel applications of all sorts.  I will do a four or five part series detailing the different type of caster applications in order to help solve problems you may be having in your operation.

Today we are talking about the second part of the casters series.  This blog focuses on the medium-duty industrial casters and wheels.
These casters and wheels are used in industrial material handling applications and oem equipment.
Most standard specs are plate casters with 4" x 4.5"; 5" x 5.5"; and 4.5" x 6.25" top plates.  These range between 400# capacity to 1,250# capacity in this series.
Zinc plate is the standard in this series and most are NSF listed.  The zinc plate finish allows for corrosion resistant but not corrosion proof.
The medium-duty swivel casters feature double ball raceways for added capacity and durability with a zerk fitting in the swivel raceway for ease of maintenance.  The swivel casters rotate on a 5/8" center kingpin bolt and nut assembly.
The swivel and rigid light-duty casters go together with a 1/2” axle and lock nut.  The axle has a hollow shaft with a zerk fitting on the end of the axle to allow grease to be deployed directly to the bearings in the wheel.  Most common style of wheel bearings for the casters are straight roller bearings, caged roller bearings, precision sealed ball bearings, delrin bearings, and oilex bearings (oil impregnated steel bearings).
Over 40 types of wheels are available for this series.  Most common wheel in this series include:  phenolic wheels with straight roller bearings for general heavy-duty use, thermoplastic rubber elastomer wheels with precision ball bearings for quite, non marking performance, polyurethane on polyolefin wheel with sealed ball bearings or straight roller bearings for floor protection and smooth ride, ductile steel crowned tread wheels with straight roller bearings for heavy-duty hardcore & high capacity applications, and solid elastomer polyurethane crowned tread wheels with precision sealed ball bearings for ergonomic, high capacity, chemical resistant and easy rolling applications.
Wheel sizes range from 3.25” diameter to 8” diameter.  All wheels for the most part are 2” wide tread width.  Offering 400# capacity up to 1,250# capacities depending on the wheel material and wheel size.
Top lock brakes are the most common braking mechanism but are also available as a total lock brake, locking the wheel and the swivel action at the same time.  The swivel casters also take a bolt on 4 position swivel lock that can be field mounted and allows the swivel caster to be locked to a rigid position at every 90 degree increment.
Shipping locations for this series caster is available from Greensboro, North Carolina, Ohio, Michigan, Georgia, Texas, California, and Washington.
